Tetrachloroethylene

A solvent widely used to dry clean fabrics and in other textile processes. It is also used to clean and degrease metals, in water repellants, paint removers, sealants and lubricants. This synthetic chemical can be introduced into the water supply mostly due to discharge from factories and dry cleaners. It has been linked to reproductive central nervous system, eyes, kidney, liver, lungs, mucous membranes and skin problems, as well as birth defects and an increased incidence of leukemia, breast, lung and other cancers.
