Chlorite

A chemical produced as a byproduct of water disinfection with chlorine dioxide, which is widely used in treatment plants. Chlorite is not generally found in high doses in drinking water, but long-term consumption is known to cause anemia in infants and young children. It has also been linked to slower development of the brain and other birth defects when ingested by pregnant women. It may also cause nervous system effects.
